Macy's, Inc.

Marketing Intern

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I gained invaluable skills during my time at Macy's. I shadowed meetings and developed a strong understanding of what goes into Macy’s campaigns and projects from a project management perspective. Through intern events, I learned about the retail industry, how it is changing, how a large company manages social publishing, and much more. I also had the opportunity to work with a team of interns to develop an innovative business idea that would help drive one of Macy’s Polaris Strategies. My team and I developed a three-pronged sustainability initiative aimed at building connections with Under 40 shoppers. We even had the chance to pitch our idea to senior leaders in a presentation competition!

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were online for the duration of the internship. I wish there had been an opportunity to meet everyone in person, but I understand why that was not possible. Other than that, it was a great experience!

Advice

Take advantage of the people around you! Everyone at Macy’s is so nice and happy to meet with you and talk about their job, career path, experiences, and offer you advice. It is easy to set these meetings up (just send an email!) and you will learn a ton of valuable information that will help you better understand the company and figure out your own next steps.

Buying and Merchandising Intern

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved learning about the role of buying and getting to apply the skills I have learned in the classroom to real-life practices. I really enjoyed the company culture at Macy's corporate- I connected with some amazing people!

What I wish was different

I wish this internship had not been fully remote, because I would have loved to gone into the office and feel out a typical day as a buyer! This was the first year that the internship was offered fully remotely, due to COVID restrictions.

Advice

Internships are a great way to get your foot in the water to experience and test out what you like and don't like; do not be afraid of stepping into new roles, the roles you think you may least like, may be the roles that are most right for you!
